Message from the Chief of Police
Welcome to the new Police and Safety Services web page. The Police and Safety Services unit has served the University community as a sworn law enforcement entity since 1974. We are pleased to now have Risk Management, Internal Audit and Information Security as viable functional areas of our new team. Other areas include Police, Parking, Emergency Management and Business Continuity.
You will find our staff to be very professional and personable. Working in the academia has been challenging and yet most rewarding. We pride ourselves on being part of the community and understanding that our role is to collectively provide a safe learning environment. We try to create learning opportunities during our enforcement activities, thus interacting with our community and constantly looking at ways to improve services are a must. During this past year alone, to name a few, we upgraded our emergency notification system, launched the bicycle patrol program, increased training and related activities to local law enforcement agencies, re-implemented emergency evacuation drills, dedicated resources to various training opportunities in the areas of defensive driving and information security, and successfully coordinated several audits in major operational areas. We understand that these accomplishments could not have been possible without the community’s support.
Please be sure to peruse the new web site and pay close to attention to the News and Events link and review our active shooter video training. We appreciate the support of this community, and we plan to continue the delivery of quality services that Sonoma State University expects and deserves. Thank you.
Acting Chief of Police
Police Services provides 24 hours a day police protection for the campus community. Sonoma State University Police Officers are vested with full law enforcement powers and responsibilities, identical to the local police and sheriff in your home community.
The purpose of the Sonoma State University Parking Program is to provide parking services for the campus community through the use of creative, innovative and proactive measures that support University-related policies, support the University mission and anticipate changing trends or events which may influence parking resources.
Police & Safety Services coordinates the University's transportation programs, including policies regarding bicycling and skateboarding on campus. The transportation web page includes important safety information for bicyclists and information on ride-sharing.
The University is responsible for protecting the lives and property of every person on the campus in the event of an emergency. The Emergency Management Program establishes policies and procedures and assigns responsibilities to ensure the effective management of campus operations during emergency situations.
Emergency Management provides information that is helpful as you prepare for or respond to an emergency. Visit the web site to learn more about emergency notifications, emergency procedures, active shooter situations, and about the campus Emergency Operations Plan.
The Risk Management program assists university personnel through policies and practices designed to minimize the adverse effects of losses experienced by Sonoma State University, its employees, volunteers, students, and visitors.
The Information Security Office supports campus staff, faculty, administrators, and students in protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive information, critical systems, and other important information assets.
Internal Audit provides independent review and consulting services, designed to add value and improve the University's operations. The internal review process helps an organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes. Part of this process is the evaluation of policies, procedures and systems which are in place to ensure reliability and integrity of information, the safeguarding of assets, and compliance with existing policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
