We at Sonoma State University are committed to the goal of providing access to information resources and technologies for students, faculty, and staff with disabilities, whether physical, sensory, cognitive, or learning disabilities. As a long-term initiative, progress toward full accessibility will be achieved with a roadmap framed around annual goals for the major priority areas.

Web Accessibility Goals

  1. Establish periodic automated accessibility evaluation and monitoring for redesigned websites.
  2. Continue working on redesigning department sites using the new templates.

Instructional Materials Accessibility Goals -

  1. Adopt textbooks and related course materials in a timely manner
    1. Continue to work with Faculty Standards and Affairs Committee toward permanent textbook and instructional materials adoption policy
    2. Continue communication to departments and individual faculty around the student-articulated importance of timely identification of textbooks and instructional materials
  2. Continue progress toward making all course syllabi available in accessible electronic format.

    2. Expand awareness and adoption of Accessible Course Outline (syllabus) Template (MS Word; HTML)
    3. Continue support (eg., drop-in, on-demand, online) for creating accessible syllabi using Word or Dreamweaver.
    4. Continue communication to departments and individual faculty members regarding importance of accessible syllabi.
    5. Promote Hints for Making Instructional Materials Accessible
  3. Encourage attention on accessibility requirements for multimedia instructional materials
    1. Develop accessibility requirements for selecting and adopting multimedia curricular materials, working with EPC and the University Library
    2. For optimal student success, use and purchase closed-captioned videos whenever possible
    3. Work actively with University Library in selection of accessible media
    4. Direct requests for captioning to Video Production in IT
    5. Continue to use CSU contract for captioning Individual faculty members and/or students may choose to do their own captioning using appropriate tools and sites
  4. Introduce awareness of accessibility principles for application to Moodle (SSU learning management system)
    1. Consult with FSAC, EPC, and SDC to raise awareness of the need for accessible IM on course web pages.
    2. Work with Faculty Center to introduce accessible IM concepts to individual faculty as they work on their online course materials.
  5. Promote use of the CSU ATI Professional Development Website.
    1. Raise campus awareness of site resources
    2. Encourage use of site resources for workshops
    3. Encourage referral to site resources when help requests are made

Electronic and Information Technology Procurement -

  1. Establish an advisory group that meets on a regular basis to discuss, review accessible procurement topics.
  2. Establish and deploy new employee orientation training materials that provide overview of Section 508 requirements and where to get more information.
  3. Establish and deployed training program for purchase requestors.
